2026 Volvo EX40
Overview
Volvo uses the marketing tagline of “Fully electric, impossible to ignore,” for the 2026 EX40, and honestly, that’s a fair summation of the EX40’s appeal. This compact, all-electric SUV is sleek and handsome, easily commanding attention, but it’s also a machine that delivers spirited performance in a small yet mighty package. There’s a lot to love here, and a wide range of optional features that turn up the volume on luxury, figuratively and literally.

Who’s It For?
Sometimes, bigger isn’t better. If you’re looking for an EV that is easy to maneuver, yet still accommodates a small family, the 2026 Volvo EX40 is a winner. This SUV features delightfully compact dimensions while managing to comfortably seat up to five passengers. Cargo storage passes the test, too. You’ll enjoy 18.9 cu. ft. of luggage space with the second row of seats up, but when folded, that volume balloons to 57.5 cu. ft. There’s even an underfloor compartment in the trunk to maximize space.

Of course, there’s the electric angle, too, and if you’re someone who desires an efficient, ultra-comfortable machine, the all-electric EX40 more than fits the bill. And that leads us to “Real World Performance.”
Real World Performance
The 2026 Volvo EX40 offers two powertrain options. The Single Motor Extended Range option offers performance of up to 185 kW and 248 horsepower by utilizing a single, rear-mounted electric motor. It’s built to maximize range thanks to an advanced inverter, offering up to 296 miles. Conversely, the Twin Motor option offers performance of up to 300 kW and 402 hp via two electric motors, one at the front and the rear. Its Volvo-estimated range sits squarely at an even 260 miles.

While the Single Motor option is rear-wheel drive by nature, the Twin Motor option defaults to rear-wheel drive for efficiency, but can switch full-time to all-wheel drive on command for greater stability. And if you like to go fast, the Twin Motor is truly your only option, as it boosts the 0 to 60 MPH time to approximately 4.6 seconds.
Regardless of which configuration you select, both the Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor options feature regenerative braking that enables one-pedal driving. One-pedal driving is a welcome convenience for electric drivers, letting you speed up or slow down with only the accelerator, making your journey even smoother while further enhancing efficiency.

Towing for both the Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor engine configurations is locked in at a maximum of 2,000 pounds. Trailer Stability Assist minimizes swaying whenever you’re hooked up and barreling down the road. Also, you may opt for an electric folding tow bar that deploys with one-touch simplicity, making towing even more convenient.
